Official biography

Music is the centre.
Never the whole frame.

Charlie Void is a South African independent pop artist, songwriter and producer whose work moves through dance-pop, disco, electronic pop and contemporary club music.

Since emerging under the Charlie Void name in 2019, his catalogue has developed an unusually international footprint for an independent South African pop project, spanning radio, DJ syndication, curated playlists, broadcast, digital media and international music-industry relationships.

The early Just Dance campaign produced a No. 1 King of Spins entry and was reported across more than 40 radio and online-radio outlets internationally. During lockdown, Ecstasy expanded the project further through South African radio support and a UK campaign that produced seven documented independent playlist additions. You & Me continued the project’s radio and broadcast trajectory.

After a period of artistic redevelopment, Charlie returned to active releasing with a more defined visual and musical identity. His 2025 catalogue generated approximately 433,000 Spotify streams and reached listeners across 92 countries. In January 2025, Downtown reached No. 55 on South Africa’s iTunes Electronic Songs Chart—a result Charlie only discovered retrospectively while reviewing his catalogue in 2026.

Alongside his artist catalogue, Charlie writes, composes and produces for other performers. His work combines pop immediacy with fashion-editorial image, performance and long-term creative control.

Evergreen editorial

For the love of it

Things that happened while Charlie was busy making music.

Opening note
“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and check the charts once in a while, you could miss your own hit. Or whatever Ferris Bueller once said.”
— Charlie Void

(Historically, Charlie tends to discover these things somewhat after the fact.)

02

The first three

A public debut rarely arrives alone.

Just Dance, Ecstasy and You & Me—Charlie Void’s first three public singles—each developed a documented life beyond the recording: a No. 1 King of Spins entry, independent playlist placements, and radio or broadcast support.

03

The songwriter’s vault

The archive is considerably larger than the catalogue.

By Charlie’s own account, his broader writing archive runs to hundreds of songs, demos, fragments and unfinished works, with a smaller group developed close to release-ready form. Some are for Charlie. Some are waiting for someone else.

04

He likes writing for other people

Authorship does not require the spotlight.

Sometimes Charlie receives incomplete lyrics, a reference or little more than a direction, then builds melody, composition and production around it. The song does not need his voice to remain his work.

05

The sound and the silhouette

One work. Several disciplines.

Sound design, costume, movement, photography and performance are developed as parts of the same authored world. The record begins in the speakers; it does not end there.

06

Some music exists because making it was enough

Not every record requires a campaign.

Charlie has released a larger and more stylistically diverse body of music for himself than through the commercial Charlie Void project. Increasingly removed from parts of it as a vocalist, he uses the work for composition, production, experimentation and sound design. Discovery is welcome. A campaign is not required.

07Charlie was the last to know.

The career milestone he had already achieved

Charlie was the last to know.

While pursuing a current route into Downtown Music Publishing Africa’s wider publishing ecosystem, Charlie recalls discovering that older catalogue material had apparently already entered the same broader corporate pipeline. The paperwork knew before he did.

08

The range

The artist has a signature. The writer has range.

His artist work is rooted in synthesizer-led dance-pop, disco, electropop and diva-pop. The writing desk has also moved through jazz, cabaret, musical theatre and recent amapiano commissions.
